Cleaner air in New York City correlates with improved early childhood cognitive scores

A recent study reveals that reductions in air pollution in northern Manhattan and the South Bronx are associated with better cognitive performance among children as young as three, highlighting the broader benefits of cleaner urban air.

Children in New York City appear to have gained more than cleaner skies from a long-running drop in air pollution: their early cognitive scores also seem to have improved. Research covering children born between 1998 and 2020 in Northern Manhattan and the South Bronx found that as exposure to pollution fell, performance on standard early development tests rose.

The study tracked more than 1,100 children and compared prenatal exposure to fine particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with scores on the Mental Development Index at ages one, two and three. According to the researchers, exposure to all three pollutants declined sharply over the study period. Earlier work by the same team found that average prenatal exposure to PM2.5 fell by 51% between 1998 and 2016, nitrogen dioxide by 48%, and PAH exposure by 66% between 1998 and 2020.

The Columbia Centre for Children’s Environmental Health, which has long studied low-income neighbourhoods in northern Manhattan and the South Bronx, has previously reported that childhood exposure to urban pollutants can affect respiratory health and neurodevelopment. In this latest work, higher prenatal pollution exposure was generally linked with lower cognitive scores, with the clearest pattern emerging in the oldest part of the cohort, where three-year-olds showed the strongest gains over time.

The findings do not prove that cleaner air alone caused the improvement, and the authors say other changes in neighbourhood conditions and social factors may also have played a part. Even so, the result adds to a broader body of evidence, including previous studies linking air pollution with developmental delays, academic support needs and poorer cognitive performance. Frederica Perera, professor emerita of environmental health sciences at Columbia Mailman School, said the research offers new support for efforts to cut fossil fuel emissions and protect developing brains.
