Innovative tips help parents craft healthier, appealing school lunches amid growing safety concerns

As families gear up for the new school year, experts emphasise the importance of balanced, safe, and visually appealing lunchboxes that cater to children’s tastes and needs, offering fresh strategies to reduce meal prep stress.

As families prepare for the new school year, lunchboxes are getting renewed attention for a simple reason: parents want meals that are easy to pack, affordable and likely to be eaten. In a CBS News segment, registered dietitian Megan McNamee said the goal is to make school lunches less stressful for adults while still keeping them appealing for children.

Nutrition experts say the most reliable approach is also the most balanced one. The Cleveland Clinic advises parents to build lunches around a mix of food groups, including fruit, vegetables, grains and protein, so the meal provides steady energy through the school day. It also recommends letting children help choose or assemble their lunches, which can make them more likely to finish what is packed.

Food safety matters just as much as variety. The University of Arkansas Extension says perishable foods should not be left unrefrigerated for more than two hours and suggests using insulated lunchboxes or thermoses to help keep meals at safe temperatures. Planning ahead, it adds, can reduce last-minute stress and make it easier to keep lunches varied rather than repetitive.

Experts also say presentation and portion size can make a difference, especially for younger children. Children’s Health Orange County recommends packing bite-sized foods and smaller servings to match children’s appetites, while Momables suggests tailoring lunch ideas to different age groups, from preschoolers to teenagers. CBS Baltimore has also reported that making meals visually appealing can help turn a healthy lunch into one children are more willing to eat.
