New research suggests that immediate vocal imitation and exaggerated speech styles like parentese foster early communication skills in infants, highlighting the importance of responsive interaction before children speak their first words.
Before babies say their first words, they are already learning the rhythm of conversation through tiny exchanges with the adults around them, according to research led by Martha Pelaez of Florida International University. The paper argues that what looks like playful babble is actually an early form of turn-taking that helps build the foundations of language. Published in the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, the study draws on decades of work on infant vocal development and suggests that communication begins long before full speech does.
The researchers focus on two adult responses that come up again and again in everyday life: immediately echoing a baby’s sounds and using parentese, the sing-song, exaggerated style of speech often used with infants. Both appear to support early language growth, but the strongest effect comes from prompt vocal imitation, which appears to encourage babies to vocalise more often and in more speech-like ways. Earlier studies have found similar results, including work showing that maternal imitation can reinforce infant vocalisations and that parentese can prompt more speech-like sounds in both typically developing and autistic infants.
Timing is central to the effect. When an adult responds within moments of a baby’s coo or babble, the infant is more likely to stay engaged and vocalise again. Delay weakens that connection. Pelaez compared the exchange to an ordinary conversation, where a reply that comes much later loses its natural flow. She said these fast back-and-forth moments help babies learn that their sounds can influence the world around them, making them an important first step in communication.
The paper also points to possible explanations for why humans seem so tuned to these exchanges, including conditioning, social reinforcement and broader evolutionary benefits linked to bonding and attention. It notes that similar infant-directed vocal patterns have been observed in some vocal-learning animals, such as dolphins, bats and zebra finches. For parents and clinicians, the message is practical: responsive talk, especially in infancy, may help strengthen early vocal behaviour in children with and without developmental differences. Pelaez’s advice is simple: “Talk with your baby, not just to your baby.”
