Teen online gambling blurs lines between play and wagering, raising early addiction concerns

Children are being introduced to gambling-like features through phones, video games, and online communities, with experts warning that early exposure can lead to costly addictions, often unnoticed by parents.

Teens are being drawn into gambling far earlier than many parents realise, and the shift is being powered less by casino floors than by phones, video games and online communities. KCTV 5 reported that the growth of sports betting apps, esports odds and gambling-like game features is making the boundary between play and wagering increasingly hard to spot.

The route in often starts with familiar gaming habits. Randomised loot boxes, virtual skin trading and other in-game purchases can mimic the same reward cycle as a slot machine, according to reports cited by KCTV 5 and concerns raised in a New York lawsuit over Valve’s loot boxes. That can make later steps into sports betting or esports wagering feel less like a leap and more like a continuation of ordinary gaming.

Parents often miss the problem because online gambling is easy to conceal. KPBS reported in April that teen gambling can go unnoticed at home, while a University of Michigan poll cited by PlayUSA found that one in six parents may not know whether their child is gambling online. Gift cards, digital wallets and borrowed accounts can help minors get around age checks, leaving the first clear signs to appear only after money has gone missing or behaviour changes.

Experts and family advocates say the answer is not a ban on games or phones, but earlier, more direct conversations about risk and probability. The University of Michigan’s health experts warned that greater access to online gambling may put teenagers at risk, and multiple reports have urged parents to watch for secretive phone use, fixation on odds and mood swings tied to wins or losses. Practical steps such as limiting in-app purchases, checking payment settings and talking openly about how gambling products are designed to keep users engaged may help prevent casual betting from turning into a costly habit.
