Harvard study links childhood sugary drink habits to higher adult blood pressure and advocates for early dietary changes

A longitudinal Harvard-led study reveals that children and teenagers who regularly consume sugary beverages are at an increased risk of developing hypertension in adulthood, highlighting the importance of early dietary interventions to protect long-term heart health.

A Harvard-led study suggests that children and teenagers who regularly drink sugary beverages may face a higher risk of high blood pressure as adults, adding to a growing body of evidence that early dietary habits can shape later cardiovascular health. Writing on Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s website, the researchers said they tracked more than 25,000 people aged 9 to 16 for as long as 25 years and found that those consuming at least two sugar-sweetened drinks a day were 52% more likely to develop hypertension than peers who had fewer than three servings a week.

The findings, which were also published in JAMA, point to more than fizzy drinks. Fruit juice was included in the analysis, and higher intake was linked with a 35% greater risk of high blood pressure in adulthood when compared with people drinking it rarely. Frank Hu, a Harvard professor involved in the work, said the association was strongest and most consistent for sugar-sweetened beverages, though he cautioned that regular fruit juice consumption is not risk-free.

The study also suggests that simple swaps may matter. Replacing one daily serving of a sugary drink, about 225 millilitres, with whole fruit was associated with a 22% lower risk of hypertension, while switching to milk was linked with a 13% lower risk and water with a 9% reduction. Harvard researchers said the likely explanation includes rapid spikes in blood sugar and insulin, as well as the effects of fructose and excess calories on weight gain, both of which are connected to elevated blood pressure. The broader message, they said, is that limiting sugary drinks in childhood and adolescence, alongside a balanced diet, healthy weight and regular exercise, may help reduce long-term risk.
