Singapore expands free childhood developmental screenings across primary care routes

Singapore parents and caregivers of children aged 0 to 6 can now access fully subsidised developmental screenings through various primary care providers, including GP clinics and polyclinics, as part of a national initiative to detect concerns early and streamline child health checks.

Singapore parents and caregivers of children aged 0 to 6 can tap subsidised childhood developmental screening under a national scheme run by Singapore’s Ministry of Health. The ministry says eligible Singapore Citizen children receive full subsidies for 7 screenings at participating CHAS GP clinics and polyclinics, while eligible Permanent Resident children can receive subsidies at polyclinics. No separate application is needed, but the checks must be carried out according to the recommended national schedule.

The point of the programme is to make routine developmental checks part of ordinary primary care, alongside immunisations and growth monitoring. MOH says the screenings are designed to catch concerns early, while CHAS notes that the system lets families use participating family doctors for the child health touchpoints set out in local guidelines. Primary care in Singapore is also delivered through more than 2,000 private GP clinics and 26 polyclinics, giving families several routes to complete the checks.

For parents, the most important practical step is to keep a separate record of the screenings rather than relying on vaccination dates alone. That includes noting the child’s citizenship status, the clinic used and whether any appointments were missed. If a routine screen is overdue, MOH’s guidance supports asking the child’s clinician for a catch-up plan rather than simply doubling up on visits. If a concern appears between scheduled checks, the family should seek assessment promptly instead of waiting.

The subsidy rules also mean the clinic route matters. MOH says the fully subsidised option for eligible Singapore Citizen children is available at CHAS GP clinics and polyclinics, while Permanent Resident children are directed to the subsidised polyclinic route. Parents should confirm that the appointment is the covered developmental screening, bring previous records and ask the clinic to verify charges before the visit proceeds.
