Research links sensory over-responsivity in children to specific brain connectivity patterns and autistic traits

A study analysing over 15,000 children reveals that sensory sensitivities are rooted in measurable brain differences and are associated with autistic traits and anxiety, challenging misconceptions that they merely reflect behaviour issues.

Children who are unusually sensitive to noise, touch or other sensations may not simply be hard to please, according to research published on Thursday in the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. The study suggests sensory over-responsivity is tied to measurable differences in brain connectivity as well as higher levels of autistic traits and anxiety.

Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis analysed data from 15,728 children aged 6 to 17.9 years across five cohorts, including community groups and autism-enriched samples. They found a remarkably consistent pattern: sensory over-responsivity tracked with more autistic traits and more anxiety symptoms, while in community samples it was linked to fewer conduct disorder symptoms. It was not reliably associated with most other psychiatric conditions studied.

The work also found a biological signal in the brain. Mild sensory over-responsivity was associated with changes in whole-brain functional connectivity, including weaker links between the cingulo-parietal network and both sides of the caudate nucleus, a deep brain structure involved in learning and behaviour. The researchers said those patterns held up across large independent samples, but not in smaller ones, strengthening the case that the effect is real rather than statistical noise.

Rebecca Schwarzlose, the senior author, said in a statement that sensory difficulties are not children simply “being difficult” but reflect specific neurological differences. She added that children without autism can also struggle with sensory environments and said identifying the problem matters because occupational therapy and other support can help children cope.
