Gradual sleep schedule adjustments can ease children into the school routine

Experts recommend a slow, step-by-step approach to resetting children’s sleep routines before the new school year, helping them adapt smoothly and avoid bedtime battles.

As the summer holidays wind down, many parents find themselves trying to undo weeks of later nights and slower mornings before the school bell rings again. Experts say the best approach is not a sudden reset but a gradual one, with the adjustment beginning 1 to 2 weeks before term starts so children have time to adapt without a nightly battle.

The key is to move both bedtime and wake-up time in small steps. Children’s Hospital recommends shifting the schedule by about 15 minutes every few nights, while National Jewish Health advises a similar approach, with the same wake time kept daily, including weekends. Several sleep specialists quoted in recent back-to-school advice say the morning change matters as much as the earlier bedtime because it helps reset the body clock.

Evening habits are just as important. Children’s Hospital and other health experts say screens should be cut back well before bed, ideally in the final 1 to 2 hours, because bright light and stimulating content can make it harder for children to feel sleepy. Calm activities such as reading, puzzles or a quiet bath are a better bridge into bedtime.

A steady routine can do much of the heavy lifting. Health guidance from multiple sources suggests repeating the same sequence each night , bath, pyjamas, tooth-brushing, reading and lights out , so the child’s body begins to associate those steps with sleep. Keeping bedrooms cool, dark and quiet also helps, with blackout curtains or a small nightlight if a child is uneasy in the dark.

Parents are also being urged not to overlook their own habits. Late summer evenings can make the household feel disorganised, but an earlier family wind-down tends to make school mornings smoother for everyone. Sleep experts say some resistance is normal at first, yet most children settle into the new rhythm within 1 to 2 weeks once the school routine is back.
