Finnish study challenges assumptions: screen time linked to improved teenage cognitive skills with balanced activity

A Finnish longitudinal study finds that children who spend more time on screens may develop stronger cognitive processing skills in adolescence, highlighting the importance of balance and diverse activities rather than restrictions.

A Finnish study suggests that children who spend more time on screens may show stronger cognitive processing in their teenage years, a finding that cuts against the usual assumption that all screen use is damaging. The research, drawn from the long-running PANIC study and published in Pediatric Exercise Science, followed children for 8 years and assessed learning, attention and working memory in adolescence using the CogState test battery. Its authors say the results point to a need for balance rather than blanket restrictions, with screen-based activity potentially supporting active thinking when used for learning, creativity and problem-solving.

The study also found that the links between movement and cognition were more nuanced than a simple more-exercise-is-better model. In girls, more light-intensity activity over time was tied to better working memory, while in boys, more guided physical activity was associated with the same outcome. By contrast, lower levels of self-reported unsupervised activity were linked with better cognitive processing, and sensor-based measures of activity and sedentary time were not clearly connected with cognition. The researchers said that may be because devices cannot show what a young person is actually doing during active or inactive periods.

The findings sit alongside other Finnish research suggesting that the way young people use computers matters as much as the amount of time spent online. One study on adolescents’ time use found that those who spent more time alone also spent significantly more time computing and less time in sport and social interaction, with girls tending to spend more time alone and boys more time computing. Separately, earlier longitudinal research has found that time at the computer can be a positive determinant of cognitive performance in children and adolescents, although other activities such as watching television were linked with weaker results.

Taken together, the studies suggest that childhood habits may shape later cognitive development in ways that are more complex than a simple screen-time warning would imply. Childhood physical fitness has also been linked with better cognition and mental health in adolescence, reinforcing the idea that movement still matters for brain development. The message from the Finnish researchers is not that screens are harmless, but that the quality of screen use, the type of physical activity and the balance between the two may all influence how young people think and learn.
