A study suggests that warm, engaging parenting can help reduce the likelihood of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children, even when prenatal inflammation raises the initial risk, highlighting the importance of early caregiving in neurodevelopment.
Warm, responsive parenting may help offset a child’s later risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder when inflammation during pregnancy has already raised the odds, according to a new study reported by HealthDay News and published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry. The findings add to growing evidence that what happens before birth can shape a child’s neurodevelopment, but that early caregiving may still matter.
Researchers followed 300 pregnant women and their children, measuring inflammation in blood samples taken during the second trimester, then observing mother-child interactions at 6 months and assessing ADHD symptoms at age 3. Higher inflammation in pregnancy was linked to more ADHD symptoms in early childhood, especially when children experienced lower-than-average sensitive parenting.
The wider research base points in the same direction. A study in PubMed found that maternal inflammation in pregnancy was associated with ADHD diagnosed by age 10, while another cohort study reported that several inflammatory exposures during pregnancy each independently raised risk. Separate research has also linked maternal fever and elevated cytokine levels to later ADHD symptoms in children, suggesting inflammation may be an important marker of risk.
The Oregon Health and Science University team said the next step is to test ways of reducing inflammation during pregnancy, including omega-3 supplements and mindfulness meditation. Lead researcher Elinor Sullivan said small moments of connection can have lasting effects, while Hanna Gustafsson said prenatal biology and the early home environment both help shape a child’s development.
