A new four-part podcast mini-series aims to reshape autism support by emphasising relationship-building, play, and emotional development, featuring practical guidance and autistic voices to help families and professionals choose suitable approaches.
A new four-part podcast mini-series is aiming to reframe how autism support is discussed, placing relationship-building, play and emotional development at the centre of the conversation. “Rethinking Autism Therapy” is presented for parents, carers, professionals and autistic people who want an introduction to DIRFloortime, a developmental approach that the Interdisciplinary Council on Development and Learning describes as strength-based, individualised and relationship-led. According to the podcast’s makers, the series is designed to explain the model in practical terms while keeping autistic voices in view.
Hosted by Daria Brown, the series brings in different co-hosts across its episodes to explore what DIRFloortime is, what it can feel like in practice and why supporters argue it better reflects autistic needs than approaches focused narrowly on behaviour. The National Autistic Society says DIRFloortime training emphasises emotional development and the importance of relationships through play, and can be used in a range of settings to support social and emotional growth.
The programme also seeks to give listeners tools for deciding whether the approach fits their family or professional context. That includes practical guidance on building meaningful connection and supporting development in ways that respect each autistic person’s individuality. The ICDL says the model is intended to help children develop healthy foundations for social, emotional and intellectual capacities rather than simply modifying specific behaviours.
