New review reveals early childhood screen habits may hinder social and emotional development

A systematic review highlights that excessive screen use among young children is linked to weaker social and emotional skills, with family dynamics playing a crucial role in shaping outcomes. Experts call for cautious use and more shared activities to support early development.

A new systematic review has found that screen use among young children is frequently above recommended limits and is linked with weaker outcomes across several areas of development, particularly social and emotional skills. The study, published in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health and based on 18 papers from 2020 to 2025, examined children aged 2 to 7 and looked not only at screen exposure but also at how family behaviour shapes its effects.

According to the review, more than 61% of the studies found children were using screens for longer than the 1-hour daily limit recommended by paediatric bodies for many preschool-age children. Researchers found the most common area of concern was socio-emotional development, followed by cognition, language and motor skills. The evidence linked heavier screen use with poorer attention, weaker working memory, hyperactivity, impulsivity, language delays, emotional regulation problems and less family interaction.

The pattern was not uniform, however. Some studies reported that educational or high-quality content could be associated with better outcomes, including stronger inhibitory control and vocabulary. But those gains appeared limited and did not offset the wider association between excessive use and developmental risk. The review also found that sleep problems were more common in children with higher screen exposure, adding to concerns about the broader effects of digital habits in early childhood.

Family context emerged as a major factor. Parental modelling, supervision, co-viewing and shared reading all influenced how screens affected children. In several studies, children whose parents used screens heavily were more likely to do the same. By contrast, active supervision and reading together were linked with better language and socio-emotional outcomes. The review also noted that some parents used devices to calm tantrums or manage behaviour, a practice associated with weaker self-control and executive function in children.

The authors said the evidence supports a more cautious approach to early screen use, especially because most of the available studies were cross-sectional and therefore cannot prove cause and effect. They argued that families matter as much as time limits: the quality of content, the presence of adults and the strength of parent-child interaction all shape outcomes. The review concludes that reducing screen exposure, encouraging shared activities and strengthening parental digital habits may help protect early development.
