As children transition back to traditional classrooms, experts warn that digital habits formed during summer can hinder focus and attention, urging families to implement simple routines to combat ‘popcorn brain’.
As children head back to school, some may be bringing more than new backpacks and fresh notebooks into the classroom. After months of looser schedules and heavier screen use, experts say the shift from fast-moving digital content to slower, more structured lessons can leave young people feeling restless, distracted and less able to settle.
Matt Edelstein, a clinical psychologist and board-certified behaviour analyst at Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, told WTOP that constant notifications and endless scrolling can contribute to what some call “popcorn brain”. The phrase describes a mind that keeps jumping from one stimulus to another, much like kernels popping in rapid bursts. In practice, that can make it harder for students to concentrate, remember what they have heard and follow instructions.
Edelstein said many children are used to consuming videos at accelerated speeds, which can make a normal classroom pace feel dull or frustrating by comparison. That is one reason the return to school can feel abrupt after summer, especially for pupils who have spent long stretches on phones, tablets and streaming platforms. Other health and psychology outlets describe the same pattern as a form of digital multitasking, in which constant switching weakens sustained attention and increases mental fatigue.
Experts who write about the issue, including the Mayo Clinic Press and Simply Psychology, say the condition is best understood as a learned habit rather than a permanent change. Their guidance is broadly similar: reduce notifications, disable autoplay, create screen-free periods and practise single-tasking. Edelstein also recommends that families restore predictable sleep and meal routines, then set clear limits around devices. He said parents should not assume they need to make drastic changes overnight, arguing that even small adjustments can help children regain focus.
