Research suggests that limiting sugar consumption during pregnancy and early childhood may reduce long-term dementia risk, highlighting the importance of early nutrition in brain health.
Reducing sugar intake in early life, including during pregnancy and the first 2 years after birth, may lower the risk of dementia decades later, according to research published in npj Aging. The study drew on an unusual historical shift in Britain, when sugar rationing ended in the mid-20th century, allowing researchers to compare people born during scarcity with those born after supplies recovered.
The findings suggest that children exposed to stricter sugar limits in the first 1,000 days of life had a lower likelihood of developing dementia in later years and, if they did develop it, tended to do so later than those born into a period of greater availability. Researchers say that makes early nutrition a potentially important factor in shaping long-term brain health.
The study adds to a growing body of evidence linking sugar and cognitive decline. Separate UK Biobank analyses involving more than 170,000 participants have found that higher intake of total sugars, free sugars and sucrose was associated with a greater risk of dementia, with some of the strongest signals seen in women. Another large cohort study of more than 210,000 people reported that higher sugar consumption and high-sugar dietary patterns were tied to increased risk of all-cause dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Researchers have also pointed to broader metabolic effects. High sugar intake early in life is thought to contribute to insulin resistance, inflammation and poor glucose regulation, all of which may affect the brain as well as the body. That helps explain why lower sugar exposure in childhood is being discussed not only as a way to reduce dementia risk, but also as a means of lowering the chances of type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, two conditions that are themselves linked to cognitive decline.
