Children's iron deficiency remains a hidden threat to brain development, warns paediatric specialist

Despite its crucial role in brain development and learning, iron deficiency in children often goes unnoticed, with experts highlighting gaps in dietary intake and the need for early intervention.

Iron deficiency in children remains a problem that parents often miss, despite its importance for brain development and long-term learning, a paediatric specialist said at the Pediatric Science & Health Summit 2026 in Nusa Dua, Bali, on August 9.

Rini Sekartini, a consultant in paediatric social growth and development, said iron is a key micronutrient for neurological development and that a shortage can affect cognition, especially in children older than 5. She warned that iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anaemia are not always easy to spot early, and may progress without obvious symptoms until they begin to affect a child’s growth and development.

Sekartini cited findings from the South East Asian Nutrition Survey II Indonesia, or SEANUTS II, which she said showed Indonesian children are still falling short of recommended iron intake. According to the study she referred to, average iron consumption reached only 65.8% of the recommended dietary allowance.

She added that iron deficiency can affect attention, memory, energy levels and immune strength, making early detection and intervention important before the condition worsens. Monitoring iron intake and checking haemoglobin, she said, can help identify risk sooner, depending on a child’s condition and a health worker’s advice.
