Researchers highlight apple and nut butter as effective mid-afternoon energy booster

Dietitians recommend a simple snack of apple slices and nut butter to combat the mid-afternoon slump, offering a balanced alternative to sugary treats and maintaining steady energy levels throughout the day.

A mid-afternoon slump is a familiar problem for many workers, but dietitians say the answer is not another biscuit, chocolate bar or packet of crisps. A simple snack of apple slices with nut butter may offer a steadier lift, helping to bridge the gap between lunch and dinner without the crash that often follows sugary, highly processed foods.

The appeal lies in balance. Apples bring fibre and slow-release carbohydrates, while nut butter adds protein and healthy fats, a combination that can keep energy levels more even for longer. Johns Hopkins Medicine says dips in concentration and alertness during the afternoon are common and can be eased by balanced meals, hydration and foods that pair carbohydrates with protein.

Nutrition specialists also point out that fatigue is not always about food alone. Low fluid intake, poor sleep, stress and an unbalanced diet can all make the slump worse. Because apples are mostly water, they may help with hydration as well as satiety, while the fibre and fat in the snack can slow digestion and reduce the urge to keep grazing before the end of the day.

The key, dietitians say, is to choose the right ingredients. That means nut butter with as few additives as possible, ideally just nuts and a little salt, rather than products loaded with sugar or extra oils. If apples are not available, pears offer a similar option, and a small amount of dark chocolate or seeds can add flavour without turning the snack into another sugar hit.
