New genetic insights highlight the importance of tailored support for children with dyslexia and ADHD

Recent research reveals shared genetic links but distinct profiles between dyslexia and ADHD, underscoring the need for personalised educational strategies to support children with either or both conditions.

Dyslexia and ADHD often appear together, but the overlap does not mean they are the same condition. Research cited by Dyslexic Advantage suggests the two co-occur in about 25% to 40% of cases, and a 2024 genetic study found 49 shared genomic regions, pointing to common biological influences while also showing distinct genetic contributions. The same study indicated that dyslexia is more strongly tied to reading and learning-related areas. 

That distinction matters in schools and clinics, where a child’s reading problems can be wrongly blamed on distractibility, poor effort or weak motivation. Research summarised by Wiley and other recent genetic work suggests that reading difficulties are more closely linked to the inattention side of ADHD than to hyperactivity alone, but they still need to be considered on their own merits. In practice, a student may have ADHD, dyslexia or both, and the right support depends on recognising which profile is present. 

The learning demands also differ. Dyslexia is most closely associated with weaknesses in the phonological loop, the part of working memory that handles speech-based information, while ADHD is more often linked to the central executive system, which helps manage attention, planning and self-control. When both conditions are present, their effects can add up, making sustained reading, decoding and organisation especially difficult. 

Treatment and instruction should therefore play different roles. ADHD interventions such as medication, behavioural strategies and parent training can reduce inattention and hyperactivity, but they do not teach reading. Structured, explicit literacy instruction remains the key support for decoding and word reading, and students tend to do best when attention supports and reading instruction are combined rather than treated as substitutes. 

The article also notes that ADHD is not only associated with difficulty. Studies by Holly White and colleagues have linked ADHD traits with stronger performance on some creativity tasks, including divergent thinking and original idea generation. That does not erase the challenges many students face in class, but it does suggest that a learning environment can sometimes help those students show strengths that might otherwise be overlooked. 

Section 504 plans can be useful for students with dyslexia, ADHD or both, especially when extended time, short breaks and reduced cognitive load help make performance more accurate. For students with dyslexia, extra time can be crucial for reading and writing; for students with ADHD, it can help with attention lapses and mental fatigue. When schools identify both conditions clearly, they are better placed to match support to need rather than mistaking one difficulty for the whole picture. 
