New research suggests that children’s aerobic fitness may enhance their ability to suppress impulses and improve attention, highlighting the importance of physical activity beyond muscle and heart strength.
Children’s fitness may do more than strengthen muscles and hearts; it may also shape how well the brain can hold back impulsive reactions, according to new research from Northeastern University published in Scientific Reports.
The study followed about 100 children aged 9 and 10 and separated fitness from body composition rather than treating them as the same thing. Researchers used DEXA scans, which can distinguish fat from lean tissue, alongside treadmill testing to estimate aerobic fitness, a measure of how efficiently the body uses oxygen during exercise.
To examine self-control, the children took part in a computer task that required them to suppress an automatic response when the rules changed. The scientists also tracked brain activity with electroencephalography, or EEG, giving them a direct view of how the brain was working during the exercise.
According to the findings reported in Scientific Reports and summarised by PubMed and Nature, children with higher aerobic fitness performed better on the more demanding parts of the task and showed signs of allocating more mental effort to attention and control. By contrast, higher body fat was tied to more impulsive responses, even though accuracy was not necessarily lower overall.
The distinction matters, because it suggests that weight alone does not tell the full story. Two children with the same scale weight can have very different mixes of muscle and fat, and the study found that fitness and body composition each had an independent link to inhibitory control, the ability to pause, ignore distractions and resist acting on impulse.
The work adds to earlier research indicating that exercise can support aspects of thinking and learning in children. Past studies, including randomised trials published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine and Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, have found benefits from aerobic activity for cognitive control and broader mental performance, while other research has linked physical fitness to working memory and school achievement.
The new study does not prove that better fitness directly causes stronger self-control, and the researchers noted that other lifestyle factors may also play a part. Even so, it strengthens the case for treating fitness and body composition as separate measures when studying children’s brain health.
