The UK Health Security Agency has intensified efforts to boost measles vaccination rates amid recent outbreaks and concerns over vaccine coverage gaps among at-risk populations.
The UK Health Security Agency is urging families to check whether they are protected against measles as it steps up a fresh awareness drive aimed at people who may have missed childhood vaccinations. The campaign comes as health officials try to lift uptake after outbreaks in parts of England over the past two years.
Measles is among the most contagious viruses known and spreads through coughs and sneezes, but also through the air after an infected person has left a room. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says up to 90% of unvaccinated people exposed to the virus will become infected, while UK health guidance stresses that ordinary hygiene habits are not enough to stop transmission on their own.
The illness can start with fever, cough, a runny nose and sore eyes before a rash appears. UK guidance says complications can include pneumonia, ear infections, diarrhoea, convulsions, encephalitis and, in rare cases, death. The CDC adds that young children, adults over 20 and pregnant women are at greater risk of serious outcomes.
Officials say the best protection is the MMR vaccine, which guards against measles, mumps and rubella. The NHS says two doses provide long-lasting protection, with around 99% protection against measles and rubella after the full course. The vaccine is recommended for children, teenagers and adults who missed doses, as well as people planning pregnancy, healthcare workers and travellers to countries where measles is more common. The UKHSA has also issued catch-up advice for those under 30 who may not have received two doses as children.
Pregnant women are being told to take particular care because measles infection can raise the risk of miscarriage, premature birth and stillbirth. Health officials also continue to stress that there is no evidence linking the MMR vaccine with autism, a claim that has been repeatedly disproved in large studies.
