Instacart’s data reveals a sharp rise in pre-portioned and protein-rich snack selections as families prepare for the new school year, with regional preferences highlighting evolving breakfast trends.
As the new school year approaches, Instacart says families are turning sharply towards portable, pre-portioned foods, with variety pack snacks running 41% above their yearly average and snack bites 28% higher. The company’s latest purchase data suggests the back-to-school rush follows a predictable pattern each year, with lunchbox staples falling during summer break before rebounding in late July as households restock for weekday routines.
The strongest gains are concentrated in convenience foods. Cereal bars are up 20% from their annual baseline, while gummy fruit snacks and pudding snacks each rise 15%. Snack packs and yoghurt tubes are both 17% higher than average, and sunflower butter is up 18%, which Instacart’s trends analyst Alex Orellana linked to the spread of nut-free classroom policies. In comments provided by the company, Orellana said parents are looking for foods that are easy to pack and dependable enough to survive in a lunchbox.
Instacart’s year-long look at cereal orders shows a market still dominated by familiar names. Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Honey Nut Cheerios each account for more than 8% of cereal purchases on the platform, followed by Frosted Flakes at 5.1%, Cheerios at 4.4% and Fruity Pebbles at 4%. The fastest-growing brands are on the healthier end of the aisle, led by Cheerios Protein, which is up 123% year on year, while smaller labels such as Farm Girl and The Real Cereal Co. are posting steep percentage gains from a much lower base. Instacart says the shift reflects demand for more protein, less sugar and cleaner ingredient lists.
The data release also points to strong regional differences. Honey Nut Cheerios ranks first in 32 states, while Cinnamon Toast Crunch leads in 19 states in the South and lower Midwest. In Canada, plain Cheerios is the top pick. Instacart says the contrast reflects two different breakfast cultures, with American shoppers gravitating towards sweeter cereals and Canadian buyers favouring a plainer staple. The figures were released alongside Instacart’s Back-to-School Deal Week, which runs from August 10 to 16 and includes a free lunchbox item each day on qualifying orders, plus discounts at participating retailers through August 16.
