Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s assertions about COVID-19 mortality, vaccines, and measles face scrutiny from scientific data amid rising childhood measles cases and ongoing vaccination debates in the US.
During a combative appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” on 2 August 2026, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made a series of claims about COVID-19, vaccines and measles that sit uneasily alongside the scientific record.
One of his central assertions was that the United States has the world’s highest COVID-19 death rate. But data from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention show the country’s case fatality rate at about 1.1%, well below Peru’s 4.9%, and not among the ten worst globally.
Kennedy also questioned whether COVID-19 vaccines helped children. Yet a study published in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report found the vaccines cut emergency and urgent care visits among children aged nine months to four years by 76%, and by 56% for those aged five to 17.
The interview also returned to the long-settled dispute over vaccines and autism. Decades of research across multiple countries and millions of children have found no causal link, including a large Danish study involving more than one million children.
Measles was another flashpoint. The United States has recorded nearly 2,400 childhood measles cases this year, its highest level in more than three decades, and UNICEF says the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted routine immunisation worldwide, leaving around 23 million vaccine doses missed. But the CDC says measles outbreaks generally take hold when vaccination rates fall below 95%, and that hesitancy, misinformation and declining MMR uptake have all played a role, with fewer than 1% of cases imported from abroad.
As the country’s top health official, Kennedy’s words carry unusual weight. Public argument over vaccines and pandemic policy is both expected and necessary, but when those arguments stray from evidence, the consequences can be measured in falling confidence, weaker uptake and avoidable illness.
