New research suggests that the relationship between children’s screen use and mental health is more nuanced than previously thought, highlighting potential benefits of social media and challenging the emphasis on screen time limits.
A study led by researchers at the University of Edinburgh and Imperial College London suggests that the link between screen use and children’s mental health may be more complicated than simple time limits imply. Reporting in JAMA Network Open, the researchers analysed 3,786 children and examined how after-school screen use at ages 5, 10 and 15 related to psychosocial development, which covers both emotional and social wellbeing.
The clearest finding was not a broad warning about screens, but the absence of a strong one. The team said it found no significant association between screen use and developmental difficulties at ages 5 or 10. At 15, a higher difficulties score appeared only among young people with very heavy video game use, not with other forms of screen activity. Earlier high-intensity use did coincide with more problems at age 10, but that pattern did not persist into later adolescence.
One result, however, stood out to the researchers themselves. Among 15-year-olds, those who spent more than an hour a day on social media were less likely to register above-average difficulty scores than those who used such apps for less than an hour. The authors said the reason is not certain, but they suggested that messaging and social platforms may strengthen friendships and social ties. That broader interpretation echoes work from Imperial College London earlier this year, which found that children using social media for more than three hours a day were more likely to develop depression and anxiety, in part because of sleep disruption.
The new findings also sit alongside older Imperial research showing that night-time screen use can affect sleep quality, with knock-on effects for mood and health. Still, the Edinburgh-led team argued that public health guidance focused only on cutting screen time may miss the more important question of what children are actually doing on their devices. The study began in 2009, before smartphones and tablets were as deeply embedded in family life as they are now, which adds further context to the researchers’ caution about drawing simple conclusions from hours alone.
