Children are born investigators. They reach, poke, repeat, compare and ask until the world begins to make sense, and that instinct, though tiring for adults, is a powerful engine for learning. Education specialists say that curiosity is not a soft extra but a central driver of cognitive development. The idea is simple: when children care about an answer, they are more likely to concentrate, remember and connect new information.
Curiosity also changes with age. Infants explore through touch, sound and sight; toddlers often repeat actions such as stacking, dumping and filling to test cause and effect; and preschoolers and kindergartners begin to barrage adults with “why” and “how” questions as they try to make sense of relationships and rules. Parents do not need encyclopaedic knowledge to support a curious child. Saying “I don’t know. Boundaries still matter. Technology can also help when it extends real-world experience rather than replacing it: a child who spots a ladybird in the park, for example, can use age-appropriate digital resources afterwards to learn more.
