Early sugar restrictions linked to reduced cancer and slowed ageing later in life

New research reveals that limiting sugar intake during the first 1,000 days of life can significantly lower cancer risk and slow biological ageing into adulthood, suggesting early nutrition’s lasting impact on health.

A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests that limiting sugar intake in the first 1,000 days of life may have long-term health benefits that extend well into adulthood, including a lower risk of several cancers and slower biological ageing. The research, led by Chen Zhu and Weilong Zhang, analysed data from 64,761 UK Biobank participants and used the abrupt end of post-war sugar rationing in Britain in September 1953 as a natural experiment.

The central finding is that people who spent more of their earliest months and years under rationing went on to have lower cancer rates decades later. The largest reduction was seen in liver and intrahepatic bile duct cancers, where the risk was 69% lower. The study also reported lower risks of prostate, lung, rectal and breast cancers, suggesting that very early nutrition may help shape disease vulnerability far beyond childhood.

The research adds to a growing body of evidence that sugar exposure early in life can have lasting effects on metabolism and health behaviour. According to the working paper from the University of Cambridge and related preprint versions of the study, those exposed to rationing in their first 1,000 days tended to consume less sugar later in life, take in fewer calories overall and follow more varied diets. That pattern implies that preferences for sweet foods may be formed very early and remain stable for decades.

The authors also found signs of slower biological ageing among the rationed cohort. Participants exposed to sugar restriction had longer leucocyte telomeres, a marker often used to estimate cellular age, and lower levels of Granzyme B, a protein linked to immune activity and inflammation. The difference in telomere length was described as equivalent to about 2.2 years less biological ageing.

The study’s broader significance is that it points to the first 1,000 days, from conception to age 2, as a crucial window for shaping lifelong health. Separate research released through Nature Communications and UK Biobank has also linked early-life sugar rationing with a lower risk of heart failure, reinforcing the idea that what happens in infancy may echo across multiple diseases in later life.
