California Teen Center is expanding access to structured mental health treatment for teenagers through a virtual intensive outpatient programme designed to fit around school and family life.
California Teen Center is widening access to adolescent mental health care in California with a virtual intensive outpatient programme for teenagers dealing with anxiety and depression. The telehealth model is designed to let families across the state receive structured treatment from home, reducing the need to travel to Yuba City while still offering a level of care above standard weekly therapy. According to the company’s announcement, the programme is backed by Joint Commission accreditation and is intended to help families who need more support than outpatient counselling alone can provide.
The format reflects a growing trend in teen mental health care. Ascend Healthcare offers a similar virtual intensive outpatient programme for Californians aged 12 to 17, while Mental Health For Teens and Adolescent Mental Health also provide online outpatient and virtual IOP services for adolescents across the state. These programmes typically combine individual, group and family therapy, with some placing added emphasis on cognitive behavioural therapy, or CBT, and dialectical behaviour therapy, known as DBT, both of which are commonly used to help young people manage anxiety, depression and related conditions.
California Teen Center says its virtual programme usually involves nine to 12 hours of structured therapy a week, spread across several days and often scheduled after school. That timing is meant to let teenagers keep up with classes and daily routines while receiving more frequent support than a once-a-week appointment can deliver. The company says care can include individual counselling, group work, family sessions, psychiatric oversight and academic support, with the aim of addressing both symptoms and the home environment around them.
The middle tier of care can be especially important for families trying to avoid a crisis. Virtual IOPs are generally positioned for teenagers whose symptoms are significant enough to require intensive treatment, but who do not need round-the-clock supervision. Other providers in California use similar scheduling, with some offering late-afternoon sessions and short programme lengths to fit around school. For parents weighing their options, the practical appeal is clear: a structured mental health programme that can be accessed statewide without leaving home, while still leaving room for education and family life.
