UAE moves school admissions cut-off to 31 December for 2026 intake

Children entering KG1, KG2 or Grade 1 at August- and September-start schools will be assessed against a 31 December age cut-off from the 2026-2027 academic year.

Parents in the UAE face a familiar challenge every admissions season: deciding when a child is ready to begin school, and whether they meet the formal age rules that govern entry. That question has become more important from the 2026-2027 academic year, after the Ministry of Education updated the cut-off dates for Kindergarten and Grade 1 in schools that begin the year in August or September. According to the ministry, the change is designed to apply to new entrants only, leaving children already enrolled to continue as normal.

The key shift is straightforward but significant. For schools that start in August or September, the relevant date for checking a child’s age is now 31 December of the admission year, rather than 31 August. Schools that operate on an April academic calendar will continue to use 31 March. The ministry said the updated framework is intended to align more closely with international practice and improve educational outcomes, while giving families a clearer and later cut-off for determining eligibility.

That means parents need to look first at the school calendar before they compare dates of birth. For the 2026-2027 intake, a child must be four by 31 December 2026 to enter KG1, five to enter KG2 and six to enter Grade 1 at August- or September-start schools. The same logic applies across the system: age is counted by the end of the admission year, not simply by the month a child is expected to start. In practical terms, a child born on 31 December 2022 could qualify for KG1, while one born on 1 January 2023 would miss the threshold for that year.

The updated approach also affects how families think about curriculum placement. In the British system, Pre-K maps to Foundation Stage 1, KG1 to Foundation Stage 2, KG2 to Year 1 and Grade 1 to Year 2. That equivalence matters for parents moving between curricula or changing schools, because the ministry says placement is not determined by age alone in transfer cases. Previous school reports and evidence of the last grade completed can carry real weight, especially for children arriving from outside the UAE or moving between systems with different entry points.

There are also transitional arrangements that parents should examine carefully. Guidance cited by education providers says children born between 1 September and 31 December 2021 who were not eligible for enrolment in 2025-2026 and have never been registered in a school system may be considered for KG1 or KG2, subject to assessment and admission requirements. In British-curriculum schools, a one-off provision for 2026-2027 also gives families and schools some flexibility for children born between 1 September and 31 December 2022, with readiness assessments helping to guide whether a child should enter FS1 or FS2. The ministry has separately opened public-school registration for 2026-2027, underlining the importance of applying on time so schools can plan staffing, transport and other arrangements.
