Pennsylvania confirms two additional measles-related deaths amid a rapidly escalating outbreak that has now claimed four lives, highlighting the critical importance of vaccination in preventing severe complications.
Pennsylvania health officials have confirmed two more measles-associated deaths, bringing the state’s toll this year to four as the outbreak continues to widen across the commonwealth. The Department of Health said both people who died were unvaccinated, one from Jefferson County and the other from Mifflin County, and both deaths were added to its measles dashboard after review under the agency’s case definition.
The latest update underscores how quickly the outbreak has escalated. In its most recent statewide figures, the health department said Pennsylvania had recorded 731 confirmed measles cases across 38 counties in 2026, up from 693 cases reported just two days earlier. Officials have continued to post updated counts of cases, hospitalisations and deaths on the dashboard as the outbreak unfolds.
Health leaders have repeatedly urged families to seek care early if they think they have been exposed or are showing symptoms, and they continue to press the case for vaccination. The department says two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine provide 97% lifetime protection against measles, making immunisation the strongest defence against the virus.
Local officials have said the deaths were tied to serious complications of the disease. Reporting from Pennsylvania and other outlets said the Jefferson County death involved a 40-year-old woman, while officials in Mifflin County identified the other death as an 18-year-old who died from acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, a rare and severe neurological complication associated with measles. State officials have said they worked with county coroners to confirm the deaths and would not release further details about the families.
