Peru faces urgent measles outbreak as unvaccinated teenager dies in Loreto

A 16-year-old unvaccinated boy has died from measles-related complications in Loreto, Peru, prompting intensified vaccination and surveillance efforts amid challenges in accessing remote Amazon communities.

Peru’s health authorities say a 16-year-old unvaccinated boy has died from measles-related complications in Alto Monte, in the Loreto region, as the country’s confirmed case count climbed to 2,357. The Ministry of Health said the death has sharpened concern over the disease’s spread, particularly in the Amazon basin, where access to healthcare is difficult and vaccination gaps remain a major problem.

The ministry has responded by stepping up immunisation and surveillance measures, warning that measles could circulate more widely if public-health teams do not reach communities quickly enough. In an epidemiological alert, the health authorities said they were strengthening monitoring, rapid-response capacity, laboratory testing and vaccination drives to reduce the risk of renewed transmission.

Local health officials in Loreto said the teenager died after developing breathing problems that progressed to pneumonia. Percy Vargas, who heads the regional health directorate, told TV Perú that the area faces major access barriers and that some communities resist vaccination on religious grounds. He said the region is now dealing with community transmission, with the disease spreading through river routes that connect remote settlements.

Authorities said a specialised team from Lima has travelled to Loreto to work with regional immunisation officials and representatives of the Pan American Health Organization. In Alto Monte, health workers have already administered 821 vaccine doses and delivered 300 medical, nursing and obstetric consultations, underscoring the scale of the emergency response as officials try to contain the outbreak.
