Celebrating 20 years, Sesame Street introduces interactive games and resources to help military children manage change, stay active, and build healthy habits at home and in the community.
Sesame Street is marking 20 years of work with military families with a new batch of free digital tools designed to help young children stay active, manage change and build everyday routines. The latest addition is “Move with Elmo”, an interactive game that turns a walk in the park into a series of simple exercises and water breaks, with Elmo guiding children through each step.
The programme is aimed at military preschool children and the adults caring for them, reflecting Sesame Workshop’s long-running partnership with the Department of Defense’s Office of Military Community and Family Policy. The resources are built around issues that can shape military family life, including deployment, relocation, reunions, grief, stress, transition to civilian life and the adjustment to a parent living with physical or mental injury.
Sesame Workshop says the new material is intended to support the whole household, not just the child. Alongside movement-based play, the package includes digital stickers and printable colouring pages, making it easier for children and caregivers to continue the activity offline. The organisation says the site also offers videos, articles, printable activities and guidance for service providers, all available free of charge.
The anniversary release adds to a wider library that Sesame Street for Military Families has expanded since launching in 2006. Sesame Workshop says the effort is rooted in research and developed with military families to make difficult subjects easier for young children to understand. Rocio Galarza, vice president of US Educational Programmes at Sesame Workshop, said in an announcement that the new resources are meant to help families stay active, form healthy habits and spend time together. The materials are available in English and Spanish on SesameStreetforMilitaryFamilies.org.
