Colorado allocates $24 million to enhance universal school meal programme with localisation and cultural relevance

Colorado is set to distribute nearly $24 million in grants aimed at revitalising the Healthy School Meals for All programme, promoting healthier, culturally diverse, and locally sourced meals for students across the state, with increased parental involvement and improved school kitchen standards.

Colorado is preparing to distribute nearly $24 million in grants to strengthen the Healthy School Meals for All programme, the state initiative launched in the 2023-24 school year to provide free breakfast and lunch to every student in participating public schools. The funding comes from the tax increase approved by voters in Proposition FF and is being channelled through the state’s Healthy School Meals for All fund, according to the Colorado Department of Education and the state legislature.

School districts are also setting up student-parent advisory committees so families can help shape how the money is used. The aim is to make cafeteria food healthier, more appealing and more culturally relevant, while also helping districts improve kitchens, buy from local farms and ranches, and raise wages for frontline nutrition staff.

Amalia Villalta, whose two daughters attend middle and high school in Jefferson County, said parents should treat the effort as an investment in children’s futures. Speaking in comments shared by Public News Service, she urged families across Colorado to get involved. She said her group has already helped introduce three new dishes in Jeffco schools, including meals inspired by Venezuela and Mexico, which students responded to positively.

Jessica Wright, senior director of healthy food in institutions at Nourish Colorado, said the grants and technical support can help school kitchens move away from highly processed food and towards meals made from scratch. She also said schools are trying to adapt after drought and a late freeze damaged crops, while still providing farmers with a dependable customer. Families interested in joining a committee can contact their school’s head cook or visit the programme’s online guidebook.
