A Flinders University study indicates that a phonics-based reading app can significantly boost early literacy skills among young children, especially those behind their peers, while also providing valuable data to support targeted teaching interventions.
A Flinders University study suggests a phonics-based reading app may help young children make faster progress in early literacy when it is used alongside classroom teaching, while also giving teachers a clearer view of where pupils are struggling. The research, which involved nearly 400 primary school children, found that students using ReadingDoctor Online improved their early reading skills, with the strongest gains among those who began the study behind their peers. ReadingDoctor says its cloud-based programme can be used on a range of devices and is designed to complement existing phonics lessons.
Lead researcher Emma Grace said the findings point to the value of early, targeted help for children at risk of falling behind in reading. The study was presented at the Speech Pathology Australia conference in June 2026 and was fully funded by the Firefly Children’s Foundation, with ReadingDoctor providing free access for participants but no financial support or role in the research design, data collection or analysis.
The project also examined more than 350,000 answers from 897 Australian children aged four to seven as they practised matching sounds to letters, a core skill in learning to read. Rather than treating mistakes as random, the app recorded patterns that showed which sounds and letter combinations children most often confused.
According to Grace, the most common errors involved visually similar letters such as b and d, and sound patterns including ph, th and ng. Children also found pairs such as er and ar harder to distinguish. The researchers said that kind of information could help teachers and parents focus support sooner, before small gaps widen into bigger reading problems.
