Study challenges long-held belief linking reading difficulties to intelligence

A comprehensive analysis involving 50,000 correlations refutes the idea that children who struggle with reading are less intelligent, highlighting the role of sound processing and language skills instead.

A vast analysis of reading research led by Texas A&M University is challenging one of the most stubborn assumptions in education: that children who find reading hard are simply less intelligent. Instead, the study argues that reading difficulties are more often tied to particular weaknesses in how children process sounds and build language and knowledge, rather than to IQ. Drawing together around 50,000 correlations from 137 cognitive and achievement test batteries, the researchers say the findings could give teachers and families a clearer picture of why one child falters over print while another does not.

The work, published in Journal of Intelligence in August 2025, set out to settle years of conflicting evidence by building what the authors call a consensus model of the links between cognition and reading. Daniel Hajovsky and his co-authors used meta-structural equation modelling, combining data from 599 correlation matrices drawn from English-language, norm-referenced tests. The team included researchers from Texas A&M, the University of Kansas, St. John’s University, Montclair State University and Temple University.

What emerged was a weaker role for general intelligence than many older accounts had suggested. Visual processing, often cited in popular explanations of reading problems, showed no meaningful relationship with reading ability anywhere in the analysis. Hajovsky said one notable finding was that general intelligence was “less dominant than in some earlier meta-analyses”. In its place, the study found stronger and more specific links between reading and broader abilities such as comprehension-knowledge and auditory processing.

Those terms are less familiar outside specialist circles, but the researchers describe them in practical ways. Auditory processing refers to hearing the individual sounds within spoken words and being able to analyse them. Comprehension-knowledge refers to the store of vocabulary, concepts and background understanding a child accumulates through experience and education. The paper maps those abilities against several distinct reading outcomes, including lexical decoding, phonological decoding, decoding speed, reading fluency and reading comprehension, underlining that reading is not one single skill but a set of related ones.

The detail matters because the pattern was not the same for every aspect of reading. In the academic paper, auditory processing and short-term memory were among the strongest next-step links for basic reading. For reading comprehension, long-term storage and retrieval joined auditory processing and short-term memory as important contributors. Memory, mental processing speed and reasoning also played supporting parts, according to the Texas A&M account and a subsequent Phys.org report. In other words, a child who struggles to sound out words may not need the same help as one who reads accurately but cannot make sense of what has been read.

That has consequences for assessment as well as teaching. The researchers argue that different reading problems point to different causes, which could help schools move away from blunt judgments about a pupil’s overall ability. The paper situates its model within the Cattell-Horn-Carroll framework used in psychoeducational assessment and says a more differentiated view of cognition may be useful when deciding on support or services. Hajovsky told Phys.org that reading struggles are often “not a sign of low ability” but a sign that one part of a larger system needs strengthening.

For parents and carers, the message is both simpler and more hopeful. Hajovsky said that “foundational skills at home” can still shape more advanced reading later on, and the Texas A&M report argues that the strongest outcomes come when schools, families and communities support reading as a connected chain of development. That does not mean turning every adult into a reading specialist. It means recognising that children may need different kinds of help: more work on speech sounds, more exposure to vocabulary, more practice with fluency, or more chances to build the knowledge that lets text make sense.

The study’s reception abroad suggests how widely the old IQ-centred view still lingers. Coverage in Indonesia’s Detik and Brazil’s O Cafezinho both foregrounded the same basic point: children who struggle to read should not automatically be judged through the lens of intelligence alone. That international pick-up, echoing the Texas A&M release, reflects the broader significance of the findings. After decades in which reading failure was often treated as a verdict on a child’s potential, this analysis recasts it as a more precise and, crucially, more addressable problem.
